Pommery Lion’s Mustard is a Dijon-style French mustard from Meaux made with finely ground brown mustard seeds, giving it an extra strong flavor.
French mustards became popular in the 18th century as they made it possible to improve the taste of foods that were no longer fresh. The secret recipe for the highly prized Moutarde De Meaux, was handed down to the House of Pommery, around this time with its emphasis on natural ingredients. The French restaurant critic, Brillat-Savarin remarked, that if it wasn’t Meaux, it wasn’t mustard.
