When olive oil increasingly comes with more labels than your cooking range, it’s lovely to find one that’s not only rustic but produced in Perth and helps to sustain an entire community.
The Holy Monastery of St John is home to a grove of over 300 olive trees, which were initially used to produce olive oil strictly for the sacramental needs of the congregation. However when the monastery itself was struggling to survive, it was decided to go into commercial production with the oil.
If an olive oil could be described as `blessed’ then this one may be a contender since it’s hand pressed and bottled by the Greek Orthodox monks. All the funds from the sales go straight back to St John. It’s their way of ensuring that the Holy monastery is always open for monks, pilgrims and all those who wish to stay awhile in their quest for the meaning of life. Â
