This tin of Amaretti di Saronno is filled with amaretto macarons that are traditional to Saronno, in the Italian region of Lombardy. Perhaps the recipe originated from the early 18th century when a Milanese bishop made a surprise visit to the town of Saronno. A young couple, welcomed him with special biscuits made of sugar, egg whites, and crushed apricot kernels and an Italian culinary tradition was born.
